PLEASE CONSULT THE LOCAL IMAM / SCHOLAR FOR MORE INFORMATION:
Who Pays: Muslims with savings or assets above the nisab (minimum wealth threshold) for a lunar year (about 354 days). Nisab is typically the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver—gold’s often used today (around $6,000 USD as of March 2025, depending on market rates).
Rate: 2.5% of qualifying wealth annually. That’s one-fortieth of what you’ve got after covering basic needs (housing, food, debts).
What’s Taxed: Cash, gold, silver, investments, business profits, livestock, crops—stuff you’ve held for a year. Personal items (home, car) usually don’t count.
