Masjid Al Farooq may not be as old as many Masjid in the Chicago land area; however, its has become an integral institution of the area. This is a true testament to the Islamic religion. When the religion is taught correctly and its fundamental principals are seen as model by everyone, then we can truly say we are adhering to the true teachings of prophet Muhammad (Peace & Blessings Be Upon Him.)

Masjid Al Farooq started in the basement of a house by few brothers coming together to perform their daily salat, Jumah, while learning and teaching each other the Quran. True to Islam, these brothers need for knowledge gave way to the diligent search for an Imam. Initially the vision of the brothers was to establish the Masjid solely for their respective community in order to maintain their native language and to have a base where they could help each other through any adversities created by the Western world which they now called home.

The Masjid encountered numerous adversities. The first storefront rental was destroyed by fire located on 1902 E. 73rd Street, Chicago, IL. The founders werenot deterred, their desires and belief in Allah was much stronger than the adversities. Masjid Al Farooq relocated to 2156 E. 71st Street, Chicago, IL, with help of local Muslim foundation organization and the Muslim community support and just like the fire spreading quickly; the great word of Islam began to spread beyond their comfort zone. Thus it was due to the vision of the Imam that the brothers invited to be their spiritual leader.

The Islamic vision and direction began to grow and so did the popularity of Masjid Al Farooq.

Yes, it is true that there were other Masjid in the South side of Chicago before Masjid Al Farooq, it was the difficulty in the English language that kept the West African brothers away from those Masjid.

Alhamdulillah, what was once difficult for the brothers is now relatively easy due to brothers teaching each other at the Masjid and the local Middle Eastern, South Asian, West African—merchants, doctors & nurse from neighboring hospital and clinics, Foreign College students from University of Chicago and professors who has found Masjid Al Farooq to be a place of comfort and in convenient distance.
